The Favorites

Rafael Nadal

The 34-year-old world No. 2 should be in good form coming into the French after he makes his long-awaited return in Rome a couple of weeks prior. Nadal has won a record, 12 French Open titles, including each of the last three. Nadal is virtually unbeatable at Roland Garros as his mind-boggling 93-2 record at Roland Garros shows. Nadal took out Stan Wawrinka in 2017 while beating Dominic Thiem in each of the last two years. While Rafa needed four sets to get past Thiem a year ago, he also closed out the Austrian with a pair of emphatic 6-1 sets. Nadal is well-rested and will be motivated to keep Djokovic from pulling another slam closer to his 19 career majors.

Novak Djokovic

The world No. 1 will be going all-out to make up for his costly gaffe at the U.S. Open and he could very well claim his second French Open title if everything goes right for the sweet-swinging Serbian. Djokovic won it all at Roland Garros in 2016 by beating Andy Murray in four sets in the final. Last year, Djokovic reached the semifinals and the 33-year-old made six straight appearances in the semis or better from 2011 to 2016 with four finals appearances along the way. Djokovic is 68-14 all-time at the French and he’ll be highly motivated.

Dominic Thiem

Thiem is a real contender if you ask me, seeing as how he’s generally regarded as the second-best clay court player on the planet. The 27-year-old Austrian has been in each of the last two finals at Roland Garros and he took Nadal four sets a year ago before falling. Thiem is 24-6 all-time at the French Open and is one of three legitimate favorites heading into Roland Garros.

The Contenders

Alexander Zverev +2000

The 23-year-old Zverev has reached the quarterfinals in two straight years at Roland Garros and owns a 10-4 record at the French. More importantly, Zverev reached the semis at the Australian Open and the U.S. Open, not to mention he’s won two Masters 1000 events on clay (2017 Rome, 2018 Madrid). Zverev has looked mostly fantastic this year and he’s one of the few guys capable of beating any of the top three favorites on any given day.

Daniil Medvedev +2500

The cerebral 24-year-old Russian has suffered three consecutive first round losses at Roland Garros, but he’s on the short list of legitimate contenders. While all seven of his career ATP Tour wins have come on a hard court, Medvedev has the type of game that should succeed on clay. Following his second deep run at the U.S. Open, I just don’t see Medvedev fading at the French this year.

Stan Wawrinka +3300

You might not be hearing a lot about Wawrinka, but the three-time grand slam champion won it all at Roland Garros in 2015 while dispatching compatriot Roger Federer and Djokovic along the way. Wawrinka is 42-14 all-time at Roland Garros and he reached the quarterfinals a year ago, the final in 2017 and semis in 2016. Wawrinka will have an outside chance if the draw ends up being favorable.

Top Dark Horses

Borna Coric +5000

Once hailed as one of the top, up-and-coming young players on tour, the 23-year-old Coric is a player that I don’t believe should be counted out at this year’s French Open. In five appearances at Roland Garros, Coric has recorded four appearances in the third round and one second round appearance. More importantly, Coric looked like a dangerous player that has once again, found his footing at this year’s U.S. Open. Coric’s speed and shot-making make him my No. 1 dark horse pick to pull off the insane upset.

Denis Shapovalov +6600

The 21-year-old Canadian got bounced in the first round at Roland Garros a year ago and he’s an uninspiring 1-2 in three appearances at the French Open, but his recent form, playing style and court coverage lead me to believe he’s capable of big things on the red clay this year. Shapovalov looked fantastic at this year’s U.S. Open and I believe he could make an extended run at Roland Garros.
