2022 Australian Open Betting Picks & Predictions for Saturday, January 22

Dan Evans vs Felix Auger-Aliassime

  • When: Saturday, January 22, 11:00 AEDT

Dan Evans enters the third round of the 2022 Australian Open as the only remaining British player, but that might no longer be the case after this Saturday. Evans earned a spot in R3 of the Australian Open with a strong performance against David Goffin in R1 and a walkover W in R2, where he was supposed to face Arthur Rinderknech.

Unfortunately, the match did not happen, as the French tennis star had to withdraw from the tournament with an injury. As a result, Evans has played only one game so far, which could work in his favor, as he is the fresher player of the two.

Felix Auger-Aliassime, meanwhile, made it past Emil Ruusuvuori in round one and had to work for nearly four and a half hours (4:23) to defeat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in round two. Whether fatigue will be a factor for this match remains to be seen, but we have to remember that Auger-Aliassime is only 21-years-old so he likely won’t be as tired as some of his older peers might be.

What’s interesting is that the ninth-seeded player has yet to win an ATP title, but with the form Auger-Aliassime has been showing, it’s only a matter of time before he finally lifts his first trophy. It might not happen in Melbourne, but there are definitely enough reasons to feel optimistic about his rising star.

He already made quarter-finals in Wimbledon and semi-finals at the US Open last year and has had an excellent start to 2022.

Admittedly, so has Evans, but Auger-Aliassime picked up wins against Alexander Zverev and Roberto Bautista Agut at the ATP Cup in preparation for this event. It could be a close bout. But we’re leaning more towards Auger-Aliassime to bring it home.

Prediction: Auger-Aliassime to win

Christopher O’Connell vs Cressy Maxime

  • When: Saturday, January 22, 11:00 AEDT

Maxime Cressy has been demonstrating impressive performances over the past three weeks and enters this bout with a 4-1 record from his last five, including only one defeat against Dan Evans (0-2) in the QF in Sydney.

Since that loss, Cressy picked up two big wins against John Isner (3-2) and world no.132 Tomas Machac (3-1) in the second round of the 2022 Australian Open. There are very few flaws you can find in Cressy’s performances, and he definitely doesn’t seem affected by fatigue, which should come in handy as he faces three-year older Christopher O’Connell.

O’Connell has done reasonably well so far this tournament, having picked up wins against world no.67 Hugo Gaston (3-1) and the 13th-seeded Diego Schwartzman, who he beat on Thursday in straight sets. Although solid showings, it’s hard to look past O’Connell’s performances in Sydney, where he dropped the ball against world no.88 Sebastian Baez (1-2) in the 1/16 finals.

Nevertheless, his initial success on the Melbourne courts should give him the confidence to keep pushing and advance further into the tournament. But first, he needs to win his first-ever head-to-head meeting with Cressy.

It’s tough to call a winner in this match. Cressy should be favored, but he likely won’t have an easy time making it past O’Connell. But whichever player you prefer, it’s fair to say that this match could be a long one.

Prediction: Maxime Cressy Over 20.5 games
