Silk Sonic smoothly rolls to two major awards

Heading into the Grammy’s, most thought Silk Sonic, the super duo of Bruno Mars and rapper and singer Anderson .Paak, were an underdog to win an award.

Silk Sonic had received a few nominations in the most important categories. But those categories were loaded. Olivia Rodrigo was the chalk while many others thought either Eilish or Swift might take home the top awards.

Those who believed Billie, who seven days earlier had won an Oscar for the song No Time to Die, or Taylor might grab Grammy gold were mistaken. Mars and .Paak won the Grammys for Record of the Year and Song of the Year for the same tune.

Leave the Door Open was the night’s big winner. It beat out Eilish’s Happier Than Ever, Rodrigo’s Driver’s License, and Lil Nas X’s Montero.

Jon Batiste grabs Album of the Year

Once Grammy nominations arrived, one name stood out, Jon Batiste. The smooth-voiced recording artist wasn’t on anybody’s early nomination list.

The fact Batiste’s We Are got an Album of the Year nomination along with Billie Eilish, H.E.R, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo and Kanye West meant Batiste had a shot to win. We Are came through with an Album of the Year victory.

The album is a throwback to old school R&B, which might be the reason it beat out its more contemporary competitors. In any case, Batiste is sure to follow up the Grammy with some great work. So keep your ears open to hear what he comes up with next.

Olivia Rodrigo scores a couple of Grammys

Four months ago, Olivia Rodrigo was a lock to win multiple Grammy awards. In past Grammy ceremonies, voters tended to back the same recording artist in multiple categories.

But on Sunday night, Rodrigo got shut out for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Album of the Year. She did win for Best New Artist and also scored a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album.

Beating Justin Beiber, Doja Cat, Billie Eilish, and Ariana Grande is no small task. But Best Pop Vocal Album is not the same as Album of the Year. So in that sense, Rodrigo underperformed.

Vicente Fernandez wins a posthumous award

One of the greatest Mexican regional musicians in history, and one of the most famous, won a posthumous award. Vicente Fernandez suffered a fall at his ranch last December.

Fernandez never recovered and passed away on December 12. During his career, Fernandez sold over 50 million copies of his albums worldwide. He recorded more than 50 albums and contributed to over 30 movies.

The Tejano music legend’s work A Mis 80’s won a Grammy for best Regional Mexican Music Album. It was Fernandez’s fourteenth Grammy win. Fernandez also won a Latin Grammy for A Mis 80’s, his thirteenth.
