Top Stakes Race for the Week

Pimlico – Friday, May 20
- Grade 3 Allaire DuPont Stakes – 1 1/8 miles dirt – 3 and 4 year old fillies
So far, six runners will contest the 1 1/8 miles of the Allaire DuPont Stakes. Super Quick, trained by Norm Casse, should go off the favorite. The 4-year-old finished third in a dead heat with Lady Mystify in the Grade 3 Doubledogdare behind Malathaat and Clairiere.
Other runners include Lil Kings Princess, Into Vanishing, Exotic West, and Click to Confirm. Bill Mott trained Frost Point will also run.
- Grade 3 Pimlico Special – 1 3/16 miles dirt – 3 year old and up
Connections for eleven horses are pointing to the Grade 3 Pimlico Special on Friday. Untreated, Mohaafeth, Vindictive, Shooger Ray Too, Mischief Afoot, Workin on a Dream, Capocostello, Treasure Trove, Forewarned, Excellorator, and Treasure Trove will run.
The favorite should be Vindictive. Trained by Todd Pletcher, Vindictive won an allowance in his last. Pletcher often produces a top handicap horse around this time of the year. Will it be Vindictive?
- Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan – 1 1/8 miles dirt – 3 year old fillies
Twelve 3-year-old fillies figure to line-up for the Black-Eyed Susan. Not all twelve have a shot. Tim Yakteen trained Adare Manor will be very difficult to beat. Brad Cox saddles Interstatedaydream while Favor, trained by Todd Pletcher, and Distinctlypossible from the Chad Brown barn will also attract action.
Pimlico – Saturday, May 21
- Grade 3 Maryland Sprint Stakes – 6 furlongs dirt – 3 year olds and up
So far, connections for just four runners have committed to the Grade 3 Maryland Sprint Stakes. Those four runners are Rob Atras trained and possible chalk Mr. Phil, Sir Alfred James from the Norm Cash barn, American Pharoah sired Disco Pharoah, and Steve Asmussen trained Jaxon Traveler.
- Grade 3 Dinner Party Stakes – 1 1/16 miles turf – 3 year olds and up
After running three straight grade one races, Brad Cox trained Set Piece gets some class relief by going in this grade two. Set Piece should go off second or third choice.
English Bee will also go off second or third choice. The favorite will be Novo Sol. The Saffie Joseph Jr. trained runner finished third behind Gufo and Abaan in the Grade 2 Pan American in the last. If Novo Sol has the running shoes on, everyone else in this will be racing for second.
- Grade 1 Preakness Stakes – 1 3/16 miles dirt – 3 year olds
This year’s Preakness is shaping up as a battle between Epicenter, the Derby’s second-place finisher and Kentucky Oaks winner Secret Oath. Future action points to Epicenter going off at a shade above even money, somewhere around 7-to-5 or 8-to-5.
Secret Oath will go off at around 5-to-2 to 3-to-1. Other entrants should include Simplification, who finished fourth in the Kentucky Derby, Early Voting from the Chad Brown barn, speedster Armagnac, and impressive allowance winner Creative Minister.
