Wednesday night/early Thursday morning was a wild one for women’s hockey, with Canada avenging a 2018 loss to the United States by taking a 3-2 win to bring home the gold medal. It’s Canada’s 5th gold medal since women’s hockey became an Olympic sport in 1998, with the U.S. taking the other two.

Canada took home the gold in women’s hockey as a -215 favorite, some pretty good value considering Team Maple Leaf has largely dominated this event over the course of the last 24 years. USA was a +175 underdog, but they were down 3-0 at one point and only made it 3-2 with 0:13 on the clock.
USA men’s curling was able to make the semi-finals thanks to their 7-5 win over last-placed Denmark (which was expected as -630 favorites), but the Americans will not repeat as gold medal finalists following their 8-4 loss to Great Britain on Thursday morning, but they will play Canada for the bronze on Thursday night.
The IOC got a break when Russia’s Kamila Valieva faltered in the women’s free skate and dropped from 1st to fourth. That was able to make the decision to award her a medal even after testing positive for a banned heart medicine moot, but the 15-year-old will likely get another crack or two in her career. It was also still a good day for the ROC, with Anna Shcherbakova capturing gold and Alexandra Trusovva taking home the silver.
Switzerland added to their medal count in the women’s alpine combined slalom, with Michelle Gisin taking the gold and Wendy Holdener the silver. That was the sixth gold for Switzerland and just their first silver, putting their total tally to 13 in Beijing.
Team USA added a bronze in the women’s 1000m, with Brittany Bowe falling short of Japan’s Mino Takagi and Jutta Leerdam of the Netherlands.
Thursday’s Competition Rundown
The United States and Canada meet up for the bronze medal in curling, a disappointment for both teams considering the Americans are the defending gold medal winners while the Canadians were second in odds (+200) to win gold before the games started.
Sweden is -143 in women’s curling semi-finals over Great Britain, while Switzerland is -265 against Japan. It’s looking like a Sweden vs. Switzerland gold medal final matchup. Switzerland is down to a +169 favorite to win the gold, Sweden +208.
Finland is a huge -345 favorite in the men’s hockey semi-finals against Slovakia, who just upset the United States. In the other semi-finals matchup, Russia (-141) and Sweden look set to duke it out in what should be a closely contested contest.
Switzerland looks like they’ll add to their medal count, with Ryan Regez being the favorite at +370 to win the men’s ski cross final. All countries still have a ways to go to catch Norway, who has accumulated 14 gold medals, with Germany (10) and the United States (8) close in contention.
