Gulfstream Park – Saturday, Jan. 29
- Grade 2 Inside Information – 7 furlongs dirt – fillies and mares 4 and up
Ian Wilkes trained Four Graces returns to the races after a second-place finish in an allowance in early January. Wilkes uses allowance races to get his horses fit for much bigger prizes. So don’t discount Four Graces’ chances just because she didn’t win the allowance and this is a Grade 2. Starship Nala, who beat Four Graces in the allowance, Pacific Gale, Crumb Bun, and likely chalk Dance d’Oro will also run.
- Grade 3 Pegasus Filly & Mare Turf – 1 1/16 miles turf – fillies and mares 4 and up
First place Grade 1 Matriarch winner Regal Glory resumes her rivalry with third place Matriarch finisher Princess Grace. Those two should demand most of the action. Todd Pletcher trained Sweet Melania and Grade 1 American Oaks second place finisher Nicest should also enter the starting gate. Top underdogs include Summer in Saratoga from the Joe Sharp barn, and Bodhicitta, trained by Richard Baltas.
- Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational – 1 1/8 miles turf – 4 and up
2021 winner Colonel Liam returns to defend his title. Liam finished eighth in the Manhattan Stakes in his last. The Todd Pletcher trainee returns to a much better distance. He should be tough to beat. Other to consider include Chad Brown trained Sacred Life and Bob and Jackie, who won the Grade 2 San Gabriel in his last.
- Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup – 1 1/8 miles dirt – 4 and up
Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Knicks Go faces off against Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Life Is Good in one of the most anticipated races of the year. Both are confirmed front runners, which is why 2019 Belmont Stakes winner Sir Winston figure to attract action. The Mark Casse trainee heads into this in excellent form. If you don’t like either favorite, consider backing Sir Winston. The rest of the field looks in over their heads.
Santa Anita Park – Saturday, Jan. 29
- Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes – 7 furlongs dirt – 3-year-olds
Both of the top two finishers in the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity figure to run in the San Vicente. Doug O’Neil trained Slow Down Andy won the Los Al Futurity while highly regarded Bob Baffert trained Messier finished second. Andy and Messier will be tough to beat. The field is loaded with talent, though, including Doppelganger, another from the Baffert barn, and American Pharoah sired Forbidden Kingdom. Handicap the entire race before settling on the winner.
Oaklawn Park – Saturday, Jan. 29
- Grade 3 Southwest Stakes – 1 1/16 miles dirt – 3-year-olds
The top 3-year-old Derby prep on Saturday takes place at Oaklawn Park. The Southwest Stakes often produces an early Derby favorite. This year’s Southwest includes Chasing Time trained by Steve Asmussen, Kenny McPeek trained Dash Attack, and Newgrange from the Bob Baffert barn. Newgrange, a Violence sired runner, won the Grade 3 Sham in his last. Brad Cox will hope highly touted Vivar turns around his form. The Southwest projects as one of the weekend’s most competitive events. So get your handicapping pen ready.
