The Hawkeyes went 11 deep in the game, and got more than 89 minutes from their reserves, more than 46 in the second half. Why Bet on Michigan State?

The Spartans (18-8) lost for the fourth time in five games Saturday, 79-74 against then-No. 12 Illinois. MSU was down as many as 16 in the second half and never led. After shooting just 31.0 percent from the floor in the first half, Michigan State connected on 60.6 percent of its second-half shots (20-of-33), including 46.2 percent from 3-point land (6-of-13). The 52 second-half points were the most points in a half against a Big Ten team this season.

“I didn’t think we competed in the first half,” Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. “In the second half, we scored 52 points against the best defensive team in the league. I don’t like saying we’ll learn from a loss, but I think we’ll learn from this. I think we competed harder (in the second half), but we couldn’t get over that 10-point stretch.”

Junior guard Tyson Walker scored 26 points, including 24 in the second half, and had five assists to lead the Spartans, while sophomore guard A.J. Hoggard had 15 points and eight assists, redshirt senior forward Joey Hauser finished with 11 points, three rebounds and two assists and junior forward Julius Marble had eight points and a career-high 10 rebounds.

The Spartans have been led this year by a stingy defense, which ranks among the leaders in the Big Ten in field goal percentage defense (No. 2, 40.4%), 3-point field goal percentage defense (No. 1, 30.2%), rebounding margin (No. 4, +5.65 rpg) and blocked shots (No. 1, 5.54 bpg). Senior forward Gabe Brown leads the team in scoring with 11.8 ppg, while adding 4.3 rebounds and leads the team in 3-pointers made with 52.

Tom Izzo is 34-13 in his career against Iowa. MSU has won 14 of the last 18 games, and 19 of the last 24 overall against the Hawkeyes.

Why Bet on Iowa?

Iowa (18-8) won at No. 18 Ohio State 75-62 on Saturday. Iowa trailed by four points with 17:35 left before going on a 17-4 run. The Buckeyes pulled within six points with 2:40 remaining, but the Hawkeyes scored the final seven points to seal the win. The Buckeyes were just 2 of 11 from 3-point range.

Iowa reached at least 40 rebounds for the third time in six games. It trailed 21-10 midway through the first half but pulled away with a 39-38 halftime lead thanks to six offensive rebounds in the final 2:31. The Hawkeyes grabbed 20 offensive rebounds and capitalized with 18 second-chance points.

Keegan Murray had a game-high 24 points, which came on 10-of-17 shooting (59 percent). He also had five rebounds, two assists and a block in the game. Murray has scored 20+ points a Big Ten-best 18 times. It was Iowa’s first victory over a ranked opponent this season (1-4) and the Hawkeyes handed the Buckeyes their first home defeat of the season (11-1).

Iowa is one victory from notching its 500th win inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena, which opened in January, 1983 Iowa holds a 499-151 (.768) home record the past 39 years. Iowa is 4-1 since shifting Jordan Bohannon from off guard to point guard.

The Hawkeyes boast a 13-3 record in home games this season. Iowa has won 14 home contests each of the last three years. The Hawkeyes have averaged just over 13 home victories inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena since Fran McCaffery’s arrival in Iowa City in 2011. Murray, who is averaging 27.6 points over the last five games, is the only player nationally to average 23+ points, 8+ rebounds, and 2+ blocks this season.

Iowa leads the Big Ten and is fourth nationally in scoring offense (83.5). The Hawkeyes have ranked first in the Big Ten in scoring offense the last three seasons and have led the conference in scoring four of the last eight seasons.

For Tuesday’s game, two-time All-American Luka Garza, now in the NBA, will have his No. 55 retired at halftime.
