Norway continues to dominate the Beijing games as we head into the Wednesday, February 16th slate of events. Norway only added two medals to their tally on Tuesday, but they still sit atop the leaderboard with 13 gold, seven silver, and eight bronze medals for a total of 28.
It’s on to Wednesday, where there are only five medals up for grabs. The biggest event of the day is the gold medal game in women’s hockey, where Canada and the United States square off at 11:10 PM EST. That’s definitely one to stay up late for.
Let’s get to the Tuesday recap and a rundown for Wednesday’s events so you can get ready to continue betting against the Olympics Odds.
Winter Olympics Betting Rundown for Wednesday, February 16th
What Has Already Happened
Tuesday was a very productive day for the U.S. men’s freeski team. The Americans took home gold and silver in the slopestyle event, with Alexander Hall and Nick Goepper going 1-2 on the podium. It was the second straight silver medal for Goepper, who also finished 2nd in the event in Pyeongchang.
France’s Clement Noel had a come from behind win to take gold in the men’s slalom event. Noel was in 6th place after his first run in the final but rebounded with a 1:44:09 final run to beat out Austria’s Johannes Strolz and Norway’s Sebastian Foss-Solevaag.
Sweden brought home the gold in the women’s 4-person biathlon relay. Elvira Öberg anchored the Swedes and won her third medal of her first Olympic games, also taking home the silver in the sprint and pursuit races.
Germany, Sweden, and Russia went 1-2-3 in the women’s team sprint cross country skiing event, while Norway, Finland, Russia finished in that order in the men’s event.
Italy added a couple of medals on the speed skating track. They took home a bronze in the men’s 5000m relay while Arianna Fontana captured a silver in the women’s 1500. That has pushed Italy’s medal tally to 15 in Beijing, although only two of those have been gold.
Wednesday’s Competition Rundown
The biggest medal on the line Wednesday is in women’s hockey, where Canada and the United States battle it out yet again. The United States won the gold (over Canada) four years ago in Pyeongchang, while the Canadians are the reigning IIHF world champions (after beating the U.S). This matchup is destiny, and Canada is a -215 favorite (USA +175).
USA men’s curling is in a dogfight for the final two spots in the semifinals. Sweden and Great Britain have clinched their berths in the medal rounds, but Canada, Russia, and Team USA are all in the mix for the final two. The U.S. gets a good draw on Wednesday, -530 favorites against a Denmark team that is at the bottom of the standings at just 1-6.
The women’s singles figure skating gold will also be determined on Wednesday. Kamila Valieva of Russia is the -450 favorite, but she’s obviously raised some concerns after testing positive for banned substances (which she says was heart medicine). Valieva put up an 82.16 in her short program, which is tops in the field heading into the free skate.
IOC officials have already said that if Valieva does win the gold, she will not get a medal ceremony. Stay tuned; there’s drama on the menu.
