2020 Nitto ATP Finals Predictions for the Semi-Final Matches

Diego Schwartzman Vs Daniil Medvedev

  • When: Friday, Nov. 20 at 2:00 PM

While Diego Schwartzman has more heart than just about any athlete on the face of the planet, he also enters this match having dropped both of his ATP Finals matchups to date. First, the world No. 8 fell to World No. 1 Novak Djokovic 6-3, 6-2 in his round robin opener on Monday. The sweet-swinging Argentine then lost to world No. 5 Alex Zverev 3-6, 6-4, 3-6 in a three-set thriller on Wednesday. Schwartzman broke the gifted German early in the first set, but gave the break right back. Zverev broke again for a 4-2 lead before going on to seal the deal.

On the other side of the net, the world No.4 Medvedev has gone 2-0 at the ATP Finals by besting Zverev 6-3, 6-4 in his opener on Monday before taking out world No.  Djokovic 6-3, 6-3 on Wednesday. After losing all three of his matches in this event a year ago, Medvedev has now beaten Djokovic in three of their past four meetings.

Prediction

With his spot in the semis already booked, I’m not too sure hoe much effort and energy Daniil Medvedev is going to put into this match even though he’s gone 4-0 in four career meetings against Schwartzman. With that said, I’m going with ‘Go Diego Go’ for the big upset as the diminutive Argentine caps off of stupendous 20202 campaign in style!

Pick: Diego Schwartzman in 3 Sets

Rafael Nadal Vs Daniil Medvedev

  • When: Saturday, Nov. 21 at 9:00 AM

Nadal advanced to the semifinals at the ATP Finals for the first time in five years and knocked out the defending champion by beating Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 Thursday at the O2 Arena. It is the sixth time in 10 appearances that Nadal has reached the semifinals of the season-ending event, but the ‘King of Clay’ has never won the season-ending title. Still, in three career meetings against Medvedev, Nadal is an unblemished 3-0, though each of the last two meetings have gone the distance, including their last meeting at last year’s ATP Finals.

No matter, this time around, I like the younger Medvedev to get the job done to reach the ATP Finals, seeing as how he’s firing on all cylinders, having, not only not lost a match here, but not dropping a single set along the way. Medvedev is arguably the most cerebral on the ATP World Tour today and he’s equally solid off of both wings. I’m expecting him to run Nadal until the world No. 2 tires and eventually fades. Nadal won’t go away quietly, but he is going down nonetheless.

Pick: Daniil Medvedev in 3 Sets
